As the nationwide protests over the cost of living in Iran have entered a 12th day, rallies are spreading to the country’s Kurdish regions as well. Protesters have taken to the streets in Kurdish regions in Western Iran, chanting anti-government slogans. Shopkeepers closed businesses in Kurdish regions and dozens of cities nationwide due to the protests. According to eyewitness reports, demonstrators were met with force as security forces fired teargas, pellet guns and live bullets at crowds.
The protests came ahead of the general strike announced on Thursday. Seven Kurdish opposition parties in Iran earlier issued a joint call for a general strike, in support of the ongoing protests. They said they unequivocally denounced the suppression of protests and the arrest of demonstrators, calling it a “longstanding practice of the Islamic Republic regime. Furthermore, they urged all political forces and civil society groups to adopt a unified, position against what they described as the crimes of the regime and to join the appeal. The statement was endorsed by the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Free Life Party, Komala – Kurdistan Organization of the Communist Party of Iran, the Revolutionary Komala of Toilers of Iranian Kurdistan, and the Kurdistan Organization of Khabat. At least 36 people have been killed since protests began in late December, including 34 protesters and two members of security forces. In addition, more than 2,000 people have been arrested during the nationwide protests that were triggered by economic problems, including high inflation and record depreciation of the national currency.
