Rosneft’s Syzran refinery suspended oil refining due to damage to process equipment resulting from an unmanned aerial vehicle attack on December 5, Reuters reported, citing two industry sources.
According to one source, the repairs to the 8.5 million-tonne-per-year plant could take several weeks. "The plant is expected to be under repair until the end of December," he said.
The AVT-6 crude oil refining unit, which accounts for 70% of the refinery’s capacity, was damaged by a drone strike. It was also damaged in a drone attack in mid-August, and repairs took about two weeks.
Last year, the Syzran Oil Refinery processed 4.3 million tons of oil, produced 0.8 million tons of motor gasoline, 1.5 million tons of diesel fuel, and 0.7 million tons of fuel oil.
Syzran refinery had already been targeted by drones in August, after which it required two weeks of repairs. The ongoing repairs could take about a month.
The refinery supplies fuel to the Samara, Saratov, and Penza regions, as well as parts of central Russia. It is also a key supplier for airfields and military units of Russia’s Central and Southern military districts. If repair timelines extend or further strikes occur, analysts say the disruptions could begin to ripple through civilian and military logistics across western Russia.
Earlier, reports emerged that the December 5 strike on the Temryuk seaport in the Krasnodar region destroyed 20 fuel tanks, amounting to 70% of the facility’s storage.
A fire also continues to burn at a liquefied gas loading dock, where nearly two dozen railway tankers are located. As of the evening of December 7, the fire covered nearly 1,000 square meters.
