Troop recruitment problems and mounting losses in the Russian army are forcing the Kremlin to resort to extreme measures. Advertisements have appeared on Z-channels recruiting people with hepatitis C and syphilis —conditions that previously automatically barred military service— for "specialized battalions." "If you have hepatitis C or syphilis but still want to join the ranks, we’re open," the announcement reads. This is a clear indication of how deep the personnel crisis in the Russian military has reached. The ads promise recruits "treatment with modern medications" and "no second-class treatment." The patients, they say, will have the same tasks, the same weapons, and the same pay as everyone else. The advertisement was aired on major Z-channels with tens of thousands of subscribers. Hepatitis C is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is transmitted through blood: shared syringes, unsterile medical instruments, and, less commonly, sexual intercourse. Without treatment, 15-30% of those infected develop cirrhosis of the liver within 20 years, and some develop liver cancer. Treatment is virtually impossible in the field. At the front, a patient with hepatitis C is a potential source of infection for anyone with whom they come into contact through blood, wounds, shared medical equipment. Syphilis is a bacterial infection (transmitted primarily sexually, but also through blood. Without treatment, it progresses through four stages: from a painless ulcer to severe damage to the nervous system, heart, brain, and bones over 10–20 years. In the tertiary stage, it causes paralysis, blindness, and dementia. Syphilis spreads rapidly during wartime through sexual contact, shared objects, and wounds. The Russian army is losing men faster than it can recruit them. When healthy men are in short supply, the doors are open to those who would previously have been discharged without question. Commanders find it easier to keep such men in one place and deploy them to the most difficult areas: "losing them is not a pity," experts say. So, an increasing number of Russian soldiers with chronic illnesses are fighting in Ukraine. The soldiers, many of whom have life-threatening diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, have reportedly been placed in separate units and are required to wear armbands to indicate their health status. Russian media has only recently started reporting on the chronic illnesses affecting soldiers on the Ukrainian front, warning of a ‘hidden epidemic’. According to several independent Russian publications, including Novaya Gazeta and Verstka, infectious diseases have long threatened the Russian army’s combat readiness. To secure lucrative state contracts, Russian soldiers often conceal their ailments, which has led to a surge in infections in the trenches. Reports suggest that Russian field hospitals are struggling with a lack of equipment, from basic medicines to sterile syringes. Novaya Gazeta writes that the Russian army has issued at least one order to form a unit of soldiers deemed fit only for "limited service." In addition to wearing armbands that indicate their health status, these soldiers must occupy "defensive positions."
