Russia may be providing covert assistance to Iran in its standoff with the United States in the Middle East. According to The Washington Post , citing multiple sources, Moscow is providing Tehran with intelligence that helps the Iranian military determine the location of American forces. According to the publication’s sources, the Russian side is allegedly sharing information on the positions of US military installations, including ships and aircraft, in the region. One source noted that this could be a fairly large-scale information-sharing operation. The exact extent of such support remains unknown. According to the newspaper’s sources, since the start of the current conflict, Iran’s ability to independently track the movements of American forces has been significantly reduced, so external intelligence could have played a key role in planning the strikes. Dara Massicot, a Russian military expert at the Carnegie Endowment, noted that Iran has recently been launching relatively accurate strikes against early warning systems. She believes this may be due to Tehran receiving satellite imagery from outside sources. Iran has only a few military satellites and lacks its own full-fledged orbital constellation, so external data significantly improves the accuracy of its strikes. One of the publication’s sources suggested that Russia could be responding in this way to the US’s support for Ukraine in the war against Moscow. However, there is no official confirmation of this information yet. The Russian Embassy in the United States did not respond to journalists’ inquiries, and representatives of the CIA and the Pentagon declined to comment. Sources also claim that China, despite its close relations with Iran, is not reportedly providing Tehran with military or intelligence support in the current conflict. However, Iran itself recently hinted that it is receiving assistance from both Russia and China.
US President Donald Trump scolded a Fox News reporter for asking him “a stupid question” about reports that Russia is sharing intelligence with Iran to help target Americans. Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, suggested that Trump was aware of the Russian role and had “a knack at knowing how to mitigate those risks”. He did not say whether Trump had confronted Vladimir Putin over aiding Iran. But Russia has provided Iran with information that could help Tehran strike American warships, aircraft and other assets in the region, according to two officials familiar with U.S. intelligence on the matter. The officials, who were not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, cautioned that the U.S. intelligence has not uncovered that Russia is directing Iran on what to do with the information as the U.S. and Israel continue their bombardment and Iran fires retaliatory salvos at American assets and allies in the Persian Gulf. Still, it’s the first indication that Moscow has sought to get involved in the war that the U.S. and Israel launched on Iran a week ago. Russia is in the rare club of countries that maintains friendly relations with Tehran, which has faced years of isolation over its nuclear program and its support of proxy groups that have wreaked havoc in the Middle East, including Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.
