There are growing concerns among the Russian public over Ukraine’s battlefield successes and Russia’s high casualty rate in its four-year-war of invasion. The Institute for Study of War, known as ISW, has quoted an unnamed military and political Russian commentator as saying that Moscow was “doomed to defeat” and might face a “shameful peace”. Speaking to ISW, the well-known pro-war commentator argued that the economic strength of Western countries far surpasses Russia’s and is increasingly reflected on the battlefield, particularly through large-scale Ukrainian drone attacks supported by the West, which now involve hundreds of drones at a time. According to this view, such operations are likely to expand further, while Russia lacks the industrial capacity to produce enough air defense interceptors to keep up. The commentator warned that this imbalance could lead to inevitable defeat unless Russia quickly finds a way to end the war. He suggested that Moscow faces two stark options: either accept a humiliating peace settlement or achieve a decisive victory through a major offensive. However, he also noted that Russia’s leadership appears unwilling or unprepared to launch such a large-scale operation, implying that the Kremlin may already be drifting toward accepting an unfavorable peace outcome. These concerns come amid recent Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian oil infrastructure in the Baltic region, which have had measurable economic consequences. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense reported that attacks on ports beginning March 24 disrupted a significant share of Russia’s oil exports, including operations at Primorsk, its largest Baltic crude export hub. At the same time, pro-war voices in Russia are increasingly acknowledging Ukraine’s effectiveness not only on the front lines but also in its broader operational approach. Some commentators have pointed to successful Ukrainian counterattacks that have hindered Russia’s ability to maintain offensive momentum and may complicate its plans for 2026. Even officials within Russia have begun to temper expectations. For instance, a senior member of the State Duma’s defense committee noted that while capturing cities like Kostyantynivka would matter, it would not be decisive, and suggested that larger targets such as Slovyansk and Kramatorsk would be necessary to claim victory. Criticism has also focused on Ukraine’s ability to strike deep behind the front using mid-range systems, disrupting Russian logistics tens of kilometers from the battlefield. Observers have highlighted persistent Russian weaknesses, including communication issues following restrictions on Starlink access and shortages of electronic warfare equipment. Some commentators have gone as far as to say that Ukraine is now outpacing Russia in technological adaptation, particularly in drone warfare, and have faulted Russian military leadership for reacting too slowly to these developments. They argue that relying primarily on manpower will not be enough for Russia to break through Ukrainian defenses or even maintain current positions. These critiques come at a time when dissatisfaction among pro-war bloggers is growing, alongside increased efforts by Russian authorities to tighten control over the information space.
