Russia will toughen its negotiating in peace talks with Ukraine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday, after Moscow said that Kyiv had attacked the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin with long-range drones.
According to Associated PressPeskov described the alleged attempted strike, which Ukraine has denied carrying out, as an attack on Putin and U.S. efforts to achieve peace in the conflict.
"It’s aimed at thwarting President Trump’s efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian conflict," he said.
Putin told U.S. leader Donald Trump on Monday that Ukraine had attempted to attack his residence in northwestern Russia almost immediately after Trump had spoken with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida on Sunday.
Zelenskyy denied the Russian claim of an attack, describing it as an attempt to manipulate the peace process.
He said it was "another lie" and came about because Moscow is unnerved by progress in peace efforts.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ukraine launched an attack on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region overnight from Sunday to Monday using 91 long-range drones.
Peskov did not confirm whether Moscow would present physical evidence of the attack such as drone wreckage, saying that it would be a matter for Russia’s military. "I don’t think there needs be any evidence here," he said.
He also described Zelenskyy’s assertions that the attack did not take place as "completely insane."
