Russian air defense forces likely shot down their own military helicopter while repelling a massive attack by Ukrainian drones, according to Russian military bloggers and aviation-related Telegram channels. According to information circulating online, this occurred yesterday evening in the Rostov region near the Millerovo military airfield. Reports indicate that the helicopter crew was killed. "The sky takes the best… May you fly forever," says one Russian Telegram channel. There is no official confirmation of this information yet. The Rostov Region Governor only confirmed the drone attack. "Tonight, the Rostov region was subjected to an air attack. Several dozen UAVs were repelled in two districts – Millerovsky and Tarasovsky," he wrote. It’s worth noting that Russian troops periodically mistakenly attack their own forces. In the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian artillery engaged its own positions with "friendly fire." This was widely reported by Russian so-called military correspondents, citing sources in the Russian General Staff.
Occupiers’ public accounts also reported the downing of a Mi-8 military helicopter with wounded occupiers on board near Donetsk. Local residents speculate that the helicopter was the victim of "friendly fire." However, some Russian propaganda outlets claim the helicopter was successfully attacked by a Ukrainian drone. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion as of March 4, 2026, Russia has lost 348 military helicopters. Media previously reported how an FPV drone shot down a Russian Mi-8 on September 29, 2025. The enemy multirole helicopter was reportedly destroyed by soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the "Height Predators" unmanned systems of the 59th Separate Assault Brigade in the Pokrovsk area. This was the second recorded instance in history of an FPV drone successfully destroying a combat helicopter in mid-air. Ukraine’s first downing of a Russian helicopter with a long-range drone was also in 2025. A "deep strike" drone was used, according to the Special Operations Forces press service. The downing occurred on Russian territory, near the village of Kuteynikovo in the Rostov Region.
