Ukraine’s Navy says it had no role in the incidents involving Russian An-26 and Su-30 aircraft in Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula, and suggests they were likely caused by internal issues of malfunction within Russian systems rather than external action. In a statement to local media, naval spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said there is no confirmation that Ukraine was involved in the crash of An-26 on March 31, which was carrying 29 people, including crew. One of the fatalities was Lieutenant General Aleksandr Otroshchenko, who led the Northern Fleet’s Mixed Aviation Corps. His death marked the fourteenth time a Russian general has been killed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Based on the information available so far, Pletenchuk indicated the crash appears to have been accidental. He also pointed out that the heavy presence of Russian air defense and electronic warfare systems in the Crimea Peninsula raises the possibility that the aircraft may have been affected by Russia’s own operations. This could include disruptions like GPS interference or mistakes in air defense activity during combat conditions. Pletenchuk added that details remain limited and should be treated cautiously, as information coming from occupied territory often requires careful verification due to its origin behind enemy lines. Regarding the Su-30 fighter jet that crashed during training exercises in Crimea on April 3, Pletenchuk again emphasized that Ukrainian forces were not involved and said there is no confirmation the jet was shot down. Pletenchuk suggested it was probably another accident, potentially linked to the demanding conditions in which Russian aircraft are currently operating. He noted that continuous and intensive use of aviation in the Azov–Black Sea region can lead to mechanical strain and pilot fatigue, increasing the likelihood of such events, especially as flight activity intensifies seasonally. After the aircraft went down, the pilots were found without delay and taken for medical assessment, and authorities confirmed that their injuries are not life-threatening. This incident is the latest in a string of aviation accidents unrelated to combat that have affected Russian equipment in the area since the conflict intensified.
