The command of the Russian occupation army sent units of the 104th Airborne Regiment of the "elite" 76th Airborne Division, the so-called "Pskov paratroopers", into battle in Pokrovsk, Donetsk Oblast, without providing them with military equipment. The stalemate underscores the southern front’s strategic importance and has prompted renewed calls for greater Western support. Analysts report that Russia has shifted forces from the Donbas ‘fortress belt’ to Huliaipole, drawing from strategic reserves to offset battlefield setbacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned this could weaken Russia’s borders, calling the move a risky gamble. Despite the buildup, no tactically significant breakthroughs have been achieved, highlighting mounting operational pressure on Moscow. Ukraine’s intensified drone campaign since late 2025 has disrupted Russian logistics and inflicted record casualties, with March seeing 96% of Russian losses caused by UAVs. The Institute for the Study of War notes that these strikes have slowed Russian advances and undermined preparations for a spring-summer offensive. Russia has even acknowledged Ukraine’s drone advantage, underscoring the technology’s growing strategic impact.
