European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday rejected calls for a Europe-wide army, warning that it could be “extremely dangerous” as the bloc considers ways to provide its own security after the United States warned that its priorities lie elsewhere.
According to Associated Press Kallas told a security conference in Norway that the most important military asset during a crisis “is the chain of command — who gives orders to whom.”
She added: “And if you have, like the European army and then you have the NATO, then, you know, the ball just falls between the chairs. And this is extremely, extremely dangerous.”
Talk of a European army has resurfaced as tensions fester within NATO over Trump’s renewed threats in recent weeks to annex Greenland, which is a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.
Before Kalas intervention, Norwegian prime minister told in an address, that his country is the first line of defense against Russian nuclear submarines.
Jonas Store said he had told U.S. President Donald Trump that Norway lies 100 kilometres from "the world’s largest nuclear arsenal."
"And it is not directed against me, Mr. President, but against you," Store said he warned Trump.
Store said Norway monitors the submarine activity, noting when they leave port and test missiles, and challenged Trump’s view that European states are not pulling their weight in NATO.
"That is why I just have to say it rings completely false when the American president stands in Davos saying that we have given everything to NATO and NATO gives nothing in return. It is wrong," Store said.
Store also highlighted an upcoming NATO operation that will see "25,000 troops exercising in northern Norway, northern Finland," made up of mostly French and U.S. soldiers, a sign, Store said, that NATO collaboration in the Arctic Circle is deepening.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said last week that Europe is incapable of defending itself without U.S. military support and would have to more than double current military spending targets to be able to do so.
