Russian occupiers have again attempted to use a gas pipeline to penetrate Ukrainian positions behind enemy lines. This time, in the Orekhiv area of the Zaporizhia region, according to the 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade’s Facebook page .

According to Vladislav Voloshin, spokesman for the Southern Defense Forces, Ukrainian military personnel knew in advance of Russia’s intentions regarding the main gas pipeline. The Russians even trained on the matter at specially equipped training grounds in the occupied territory.

However, upon exiting the pipe, a surprise awaited the occupiers: leaflets with instructions on how to surrender, as well as Ukrainian drones in the air. The Russians quickly realized that voluntary surrender was their best option. And so it happened. "The first words were: ‘Do you want something to drink?’ They took us to their place, bandaged us, and fed us. The Ukrainian soldier treats us better than our soldiers treat us. We went into the dugout, they fed us, and gave us water to drink," the Russian recounted his first impressions of captivity.

Later, the occupiers said that the command deliberately sent them one way.

"Everyone understood perfectly well that there was no turning back. The pipe was welded shut behind everyone. Well, each group that came out, how many people were there, say, eight or six or 12, came out, the pipe was welded shut," the captors said.

As reported, in the last two years of the war, Russians have systematically attempted to penetrate any pipe they see in the frontline zone. This is a result of the influence of Russian propaganda, which convinced the occupiers of the supposed effectiveness of this method of infiltrating Ukrainian lines.

The first known incident involving a pipe occurred during the final phase of the battle for Avdiivka in January 2024. At that time, a group of Russian soldiers successfully penetrated the Ukrainian defensive perimeter through an old water or sewer pipe several kilometers long. This allowed the invaders to unexpectedly capture a fortified Ukrainian stronghold.

Although this was only one episode in the larger battle for the city, the Russians liked the tactic, and a year later, the enemy attempted to repeat the trick during the final stages of the Battle of Sudzha in Kursk Oblast in March 2025. Then, the Russians advanced several kilometers along a gas pipeline and were ambushed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the exit. According to Ukrainian data, up to 80% of the operation’s participants were killed .

However, Operation Pipeline coincided with the beginning of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ retreat from the Kursk region, so Russian propaganda convinced both the Russian public and the military that it was the pipeline raid that allegedly led to the collapse of the Ukrainian defenses in the Kursk region. Since then, the Russians have been poking around in every pipe they can find.

While pipes do sometimes make it possible to pass part of the route undetected , this tactic still results in heavy losses among Russians every time.
