Ukrainian troops have captured two Russian soldiers in Kupiansk-Uzlovyi settlement in embattled Kupiansk city in northeastern Kharkiv region. The captured servicemen – shooters from the 153rd regiment of the Russian Army – had been sent to film a video with a Russian flag to create fake propaganda that the settlement is under Russia’s control. Video shared in social media showed the captured Russian soldiers. The video also features a Ukrainian battalion commander Roman Kovalev who said that Kupiansk-Uzlovyi was under full control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stressing that Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, spreads lies about Russia’s control of the settlement. Kovalev addressed Russian soldiers, and the soldiers’ mothers, stating that Kremlin leaders are driving Russian soldiers into the cold in such freezing weather in order to shoot a five-second video about how Kupyansk-Uzlovaya is supposedly Russian. This was not the first such video from Kupiansk-Uzlovyi. Earlier last week, Commander Kovalev made another video from the settlement, rebuffing Gerasimov’s statement that the settlement had been captured by Russian forces. Kupiansk has been one of the most fiercely contested towns in the war due to its strategic location in Kharkiv region near the Russian border. After months of heavy fighting throughout 2025, Ukrainian forces have been conducting operations to clear remaining Russian soldiers from the town.
