Thousands of young African men have signed up to fight in Moscow’s war against Ukraine, The New York Times reports.
The publication reported that some of them posted humorous videos with Russian soldiers, but many claimed they were lured to Russia under false pretenses and then forced to sign military contracts. It added that many of them died on the battlefield.
"Although Africa is thousands of kilometers from the front lines, and most African countries have taken a neutral stance in the war, some see a clear explanation for this phenomenon: Russia needs additional troops, and young African men need jobs," the article says. Several Africans told the publication that they went to Russia to earn money, but were forced to sign military contracts.
It is noted that Russia’s war with Ukraine has cost Moscow staggering amounts of military personnel killed and wounded, so Moscow is recruiting foreigners to offset its own losses.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, about 1.2 million of its soldiers have been killed, wounded or missing, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.
"Such losses could become a political issue, although many soldiers come from regions of Russia far from the capital, so any potential discontent caused by these losses will have less impact," the publication suggests. But it’s entirely logical for Moscow to seek soldiers abroad, and Africa, according to the publication, offers fertile ground. Notably, Africa has the fastest youth population growth in the world. As the article states, Moscow has never acknowledged the policy of recruiting military personnel on this continent and claims that foreign fighters come voluntarily.
"Africa is experiencing a population boom, meaning more and more young people are entering the workforce. However, African economies are failing to create enough jobs," the publication explains.
It is added that in the absence of formal employment, the vast majority of adults under 35 work in the informal sector in precarious jobs with low wages and minimal social guarantees. For this reason, many young people seek work abroad. Most go to African countries with better economic prospects, but some undertake dangerous journeys by land or sea.
The publication reported that women often leave for work in the Persian Gulf countries, although conditions there are often appalling. Another portion goes to Russia, although job offers are often unclear.
"Africans serving in the Russian army can expect salaries that are several times higher than what they could earn in their own countries," the publication notes.
At the same time, there are two "buts." First, there’s survival. The casualty rate among those on the front lines is high. Second, there are contracts. Those who survived and returned from Russia say they were forced to sign contracts in Russian, a language they didn’t understand. They were then shown banking apps where their salaries were supposedly stored.
However, as the publication notes, accessing their accounts was difficult. Furthermore, they were often deceived and cheated out of their money, sometimes by the very employment agencies that organized their trip to Russia. Several Africans report returning without the money they earned. "Emigrating for work is not illegal, and African governments that have tried to prevent people from leaving have done so largely under political pressure," the publication says.
The governments of South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria have responded to calls for officials to do more to address the crisis of missing or dead citizens in Ukraine.
