Aftershocks continue to be felt throughout Kamchatka following the powerful earthquake of July 30. The regional branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences told TASS that seismic activity has reached an extremely high level. According to the Russian Academy of Sciences, 30 aftershocks have been recorded on the peninsula since October 31, 19 of which occurred in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The strongest tremors, measuring up to magnitude 5, were felt on October 31 near Cape Shipunsky and on November 3 at the nearby Vodopadnaya hydrometeorological station.
“The cities of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Vilyuchinsk recorded the strongest tremors of magnitude 4 during three strong events
As of November 5, the seismicity level in the Kamchatka section of the subduction zone is assessed as extremely high on the SOUS’09 scale. Previously, scientists had classified seismicity in the region as high. On the morning of November 7, local seismologists recorded a magnitude 5.4 earthquake off the eastern coast of Kamchatka in the Pacific Ocean. The epicenter was located 111 km south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and the source was located at a depth of 37 km below the seafloor.
Another magnitude 6.3 earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean on October 25. The epicenter was located 104 km from Severo-Kurilsk, and the depth was 22.2 km.
On the night of July 30, an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 8.7 occurred 150 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky . The press service of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences stated that the earthquake was the most powerful for the peninsula’s seismic zone since 1952.
Traffic in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Yelizovo was paralyzed for several hours, with people fleeing their homes and onto the streets. According to the region’s Minister of Emergency Situations, Sergei Lebedev, the façade of a kindergarten in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky also collapsed as a result of underground activity. Several people were injured.
A powerful earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, just 120 kilometers from a key base hosting ballistic missile submarines. According to The War Zone, the epicenter of the massive earthquake was unusually close to the Russian Navy’s Vilyuchinsk base, home to the 10th and 25th divisions of nuclear submarines under the Pacific Fleet. These units operate submarines capable of carrying nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles.
