Russian Z-blogger Maxim Kalashnikov has criticized Russia’s war of invasion in Ukraine, stating that the war is hurting the country’s economy and is increasingly unpopular among the ruling elites. In a video address posted on social media, Kalashnikov said the four-year war with Ukraine was “extremely unprofitable” for Russia’s ruling elites, explaining that it has reduced the profits of the billionaires in the country as output is falling in key sectors and production is declining. “In fact, our ruling elite right now, they all view the current center of power as already a toxic figure – not even an active force, but a toxic passive one. They really want the war to end,” Kalashnkov claimed. "They want to start fearing sanctions, continue selling hydrocarbons, and regain the European market. Right now, their taxes are rising and profits are falling,” the blogger went on saying. He went on comparing Russia’s current political climate to that of 1937 when Stalin’s repression was at its peak and the government critics were hunted as “enemies of people”. “The new, so-called repressive organs are also very corrupt. Under the guise of hunting, ‘enemies of the people’, they would simply start redistributing property. New predators, looters will appear,” Kalashnikov claimed. He went on criticizing the internet restrictions, shutdown of Telegram app and other media outlets in the country. Furthermore, he described the situation in the frontline as a “stalemate”, explaining that the only way out was to end the war. Kalashnikov said all these problems and discontent are lowering Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approval ratings. It should be noted that there is a growing discontent among the Russian public and elite over the protracted war in Ukraine and the economic toll of the war. Kalashnikov’s remarks follow the criticism by another Kremlin sympathizer and Z-blogger Ilya Remeslo who recently publicly criticized Putin for the ongoing war in Ukraine, stating that Russian conscripts are being sent to meat assaults in the endless and meaningless war.
