The Russian army likely lost almost all of its BMO-T flamethrower combat vehicles during the full-scale war against Ukraine. According to available information, only one such vehicle remains in service today, or none at all, writes military expert Alexander Kovalenko. The BMO-T is a heavy armored combat vehicle designed to transport flamethrower personnel. It is considered one of the rarest and, at the same time, best-protected combat vehicles in the Russian military’s inventory. The BMO-T’s armor level surpasses most other Russian combat vehicles and is virtually unmatched, save for the BMPT Terminator-2. Both vehicles are based on the T-72 tank, but their protection has been significantly improved over that of the T-90M Proryv. Instead of the turret a raised superstructure is present. The new superstructure consists of composite armor and is lined with ERA tiles. The crew consists of a driver and a vehicle commander that also operates the remote controlled 12.7mm heavy machine gun. Alongside the 2 man crew there is space for up to 7 troops. A regular setup is a 4 man flamethrower section with 32 RPO-A shoulder-launched rockets. During the full-scale war in Ukraine, according to verified data, at least three BMO-Ts were destroyed, and one more was captured by Ukrainian forces. The last captured BMO-T was seen in July 2023. However, unconfirmed reports indicate that the number of destroyed vehicles could be as high as five, and the number of captured vehicles could be as high as two. Experts note that the key problem with the BMO-T for the Russian army was its high cost—approximately $400,000–$500,000 per unit. Because of this, the Russian Ministry of Defense has not placed new orders for the production of these vehicles, despite their high survivability and ability to preserve the crew’s lives. The lack of new contracts and losses at the front give reason to believe that the BMO-T has effectively disappeared as a type of combat equipment for Russian troops in the war against Ukraine. As reported, the Russian army operates a number of military equipment models considered rare due to their small numbers in service. Specifically, one such vehicle is the BMO-T, whose serial production began back in 2001. Now, the Russians, in their propaganda media, have decided to remind people of this rare vehicle in the context of how it could be converted into a "heavy armored personnel carrier ," namely, armed with barbecue grills, electronic warfare systems, smoke grenade launchers, remote-controlled machine guns, and the like. The BMO-T is a well armored vehicle. The new superstructure is well armored. The ERA tiles protect from all but the most capable shoulder fired rockets. In combat the flamethrower troops are are partly exposed. The presence of explosive reactive armor is a further danger to the infantry as well. Effective use of this vehicle requires a thought out and well rehearsed doctrine.
