Footage released on March 2 has shown another F-15E Strike Eagle falling in flames in an uncontrolled spiral over Kuwaiti skies. Although the F-15 is also operated by Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, which are all participating in the war effort, the U.S. Air Force is the only service known to fly the aircraft over Kuwait. The Ministry of Defense of Kuwait confirmed that two US F-15E fighters, returning from strike flights over Iran, were shot down by Kuwait’s own air defense network as a result of a friendly fire incident.
The defense officials said that this was caused by a breakdown of the command-control pipeline, and said that a comprehensive investigation is now underway. Kuwait operates air defense systems Patriot PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE USA. All four aviation crews were successfully ejected and recovered with the help of Kuwaiti civilians. The U.S. Air Force in January redeployed a large number of F-15E Strike Eagle fighters supported by KC-135 aerial refuelling tankers from RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom, where they are permanently forward deployed under the 48th Fighter Wing, to Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, which emerged as the U.S. Armed Forces’ most prominent forward operating location as they prepared for a planned assault against Iran. The F-15’s long range, high weapons carrying capacity, and much larger radar than other Western fighter types makes it optimal for multiple kinds of missions, including serving as a launch platform for beyond visual range missile strikes, and providing an air defence capability against Iranian drone units. Reflecting the importance of the fighters, Muwaffaq Salti Air Base was heavily fortified, and is one of just eight in the world to host a high value THAAD anti-ballistic missile system, which was revealed to have been deployed there in early February. The Israeli Air Force and the U.S. Air Force are highly active over the area to access Iran, as well as to defend against incoming drones. Both countries fly F-15s. Saudi Arabia and Qatar also fly the F-15 in the region. The aircraft involved looks like it could be a Strike Eagle derivative, which is flown by all the countries listed, but that is also inconclusive at this time. Israel and Saudi Arabia also fly single-seat F-15A/Cs. No U.S. Air Force F-15Cs are deployed to the CENTCOM area of responsibility. The battlespace is extremely complex, and the threat of friendly fire is very real considering how many missiles and drones Iran is firing west and how much damage those weapons can do, as well as all the tactical aircraft coming and going.
