The United States lost two military aircraft in separate incidents in the Persian Gulf region and Iranian airspace on April 3. According to two unnamed US officials cited by The New York Times, both events occurred within the same day. The first event involved an A-10 attack plane that went down in the Strait of Hormuz. The pilot, who was the only person onboard, was successfully recovered. Details surrounding the cause of the crash have not been made public. Around the same time, an F-15E fighter aircraft was brought down over Iran. This jet carried a crew of two; one individual has been rescued, while efforts are still underway to locate the second crew member. The A-10 is a relatively slow aircraft built for close air support missions. It can reach speeds of roughly 700 km/h and is equipped with a powerful 30mm GAU-8 cannon capable of firing up to 70 rounds per second. Its design allows it to fly low and remain over targets for extended periods, making it particularly effective against naval targets, armored units, and defensive structures. Just one day prior, the US Department of Defense had increased its A-10 presence in the Middle East, deploying 18 additional aircraft to join roughly a dozen already stationed there, bringing the total to about 30. Officially, their role is to assist ground operations and monitor activity in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran also shot down two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters that were participating in the search for a US F-15E fighter jet. According to the US media, a US Air Force A-10 attack aircraft, which was hit by Iran’s air defense systems, managed to reach Kuwait before crashing. The A-10 had been deployed to support a search and rescue operation after the F-15E fighter jet was shot down. According to NBC News, after sustaining damage, the A-10 entered Kuwaiti airspace, the pilot ejected, and the aircraft crashed. The pilot survived. Meanwhile, Politico reports that the Pentagon is confronting a difficult situation: there are few remaining high-value targets in Iran, yet President Donald Trump has instructed that airstrikes continue for another three weeks. US military leadership now faces a stark dilemma – either withdraw under unfavorable conditions or escalate further, potentially with ground operations – as Iran maintains its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to global oil supply continue to intensify. US President Donald Donald Trump spoke out for the first time since yesterday evening, telling NBC News that the shooting down of the fighter jet won’t affect negotiations, adding: “No, it’s war. We’re at war.
