Troops from several European countries, including France, Germany, Norway and Sweden, are arriving in Greenland to help boost the Arctic island’s security after talks between representatives of Denmark, Greenland and the U.S. on Wednesday highlighted “fundamental disagreement” between the Trump administration and European allies. The decision comes after renewed threats by Trump on Wednesday regarding the seizure of Greenland; the deployment of troops is part of a European security mission. Germany’s Ministry of Defense stated that, at Denmark’s invitation, a 13-member Bundeswehr intelligence unit has been deployed to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, starting Thursday. France, the European Union’s only nuclear power, will also send troops to Greenland following a meeting in Washington between U.S., Danish, and Greenlandic officials. French President Emmanuel Macron announced Wednesday the first French military elements were already en route and others would follow, as French authorities said about 15 French soldiers from the mountain infantry unit were already in Nuuk for a military exercise. Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, French Poles and Oceans Ambassador, told France Info Thursday the deployments sent "a strong political signal." He added: "The entire operation is not about soldiers; it’s about preparing for an exercise. We currently have, among others, high mountain specialists. The president is quickly convening a defense council this morning. He will also have the opportunity to speak on this subject during his New Year’s address to the armed forces this afternoon in Istres." Germany will deploy a reconnaissance team of 13 personnel to Greenland on Thursday, its Defense Ministry said. Denmark announced it would increase its military presence in Greenland, with NATO allies joining them, just as the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with White House representatives on Wednesday in Washington to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s intentions to take over the island in order to tap its mineral resources and protect the security of the Arctic region amid rising Russian and Chinese interest.
