Ukraine’s Security Forces struck valuable Russian air defence systems in operations in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions on January 12. The units of the Security Service eliminated a ‘Prima P-18’ radar system worth around 2.9 million USD, a ‘Tor’ surface-to-air missile system worth 25 million USD, and a ‘Tunguska’ gun-missile air defense system with an estimated cost of 40 million USD in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia and eastern Donetsk regions. Video footage shared in social media captures the moments of the strikes at Russian military targets. Ukraine has scaled up attacks on Russian military targets in occupied parts of Ukraine and deep in Russia as part of its broader effort to weaken Russia’s ability to wage war. Russian air defence systems are among the most significant targets as they play a crucial role in protecting military bases, supply routes, and occupied territory. By damaging or destroying these systems, Ukraine seeks to open gaps in Russia’s layered defences, making it easier for Ukrainian drones and missiles to penetrate deeper and strike other military objectives. Apart from air defence systems and radar installations, Ukrainian troops have also targeted artillery and ammunition depots, various equipment as well as Russian energy infrastructure that supply fuel to the army.
