The SIG516 G3 assault rifle will become the Romanian Army’s new primary infantry weapon.
In total, the military has ordered 150,000 units of this weapon in 5.56 mm caliber, according to the specialized magazine SPARTANAT.
The SIG516 G3 is an automatic rifle developed by the designers based on the AR-15 platform. It uses standard 5.56×45 mm NATO ammunition.
The system’s main technical feature is a short-stroke gas piston system instead of direct gas impingement into the receiver.
The entire planned batch of small arms will be manufactured entirely at local facilities directly in Romania.

As a reminder, the Colombian company Indumil has unveiled the first national JAGUAR assault rifle.
The new 5.56 mm caliber weapon is lighter than previous models, features a significant proportion of polymer components, and was designed as a more cost-effective alternative.
