Southern China is bracing for Typhoon Wipha, which is expected to make landfall along the south coast late Sunday, state broadcaster CCTV reported. According to Associated Press more than 270,000 people have been relocated across southern Guangdong Province, with more than 500 fishing boats taking shelter in ports as of Sunday afternoon, according to CCTV. Footage shows fallen trees and strong waves whipped up by the typhoon’s outer bands in the provincial capital of Guangzhou. Temporary shelters have been set up in coastal cities such as Zhuhai, Jiangmen, and Shanwei, where evacuees are being provided with daily necessities, including instant noodles, snacks, and bottled water. Further south in Hainan Province, heavy rainfall has flooded roads in low-lying areas, prompting local authorities to drain water to ensure normal traffic. Airports in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Macao canceled or postponed all their daytime flights, their websites showed. Some high-speed train services in the area were suspended. The typhoon, which swept through the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao as a tropical storm, is forecast to make landfall in Guangdong late Sunday and will continue moving west, reaching Vietnam later this week. Earlier Sunday, China’s National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters raised its flood and typhoon emergency response for Guangdong and Hainan to Level Three, while maintaining a Level Four response for neighboring Guangxi province. Wipha, which is a Thai name, passed over the Philippines at tropical storm strength and drenched parts of Taiwan on Saturday. Names for typhoons in the western Pacific are chosen by the countries in the region.
