As reported on the night of October 22, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck several targets on Russian territory, including a defense plant in Saransk, Republic of Mordovia, and the Makhachkala oil refinery in the Republic of Dagestan. The AFU used Storm Shadow and R-360 Neptune cruise missiles in the combined strikes.
Military analyst and director of the New Geopolitics Research Network Mikhail Samus characterized the strikes as "a strong response and demonstration of the AFU’s capabilities." Samus pointed to the operational depth of actions and emphasized the need to regularly hit facilities that provide the enemy’s rear – repair bases, factories, warehouses and logistics.
"This is a strong manifestation, of course, absolutely. The only thing here is that this is the range, that is 300 kilometers. There, all military or military-related facilities must be really destroyed. There are no questions here at all, the depth of 300 kilometers is the depth of the operation, and even the corps should really act here, destroying everything that is there. This is just a system component of the complex that provides the front directly – this is the enterprises, repair bases and ammunition depots, command posts, logistics centers and so on – all this should be taken out regularly," Samus stressed.
He also again raised the topic of using decommissioned American tactical missiles ATACMS within the framework of international support programs, pointing to their availability and potential effectiveness in striking deep targets.
"Why do we, for example, say: give us Atakams? They are old, you don’t need them anymore, but we would need one and a half thousand ATACMS just for this purpose. So that not a single factory at a depth of 300 kilometers, which produces any chemical compounds for ammunition, not that there were none – they simply should not be there in principle," Samus added.
He said that such missile systems are much more effective than the "mythical Tomahawks", the supply of which to Ukraine was loudly reported by the media.
It should be noted that the combined strikes on the plants proved sensitive for the Russian Federation. According to the AFU General Staff, the Saransk plant produces anti-personnel engineering ammunition, mines kits, detonators and other military equipment.
The Bryansk Chemical Plant, according to Unmanned Systems Force Commander Robert "Madiar" Brovdi, is a major frontline industrial production and repair base: multiple rocket launcher systems, including Grad, Uragan, and Tornado, are repaired and rebuilt there. It also produces ammunition for barrel artillery, engineering ammunition, X-59 cruise missiles, and also works with reactive systems such as TOS "Solntsepek" and Zemledeliye rocket mines systems.
