Strengthening the German Army: Bundeswehr to Order 274 Next-Generation Luchs 2 Reconnaissance Vehicles

According to Hartpunkt, citing reliable sources, Germany is set to place a significant order for 274 next-generation Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles based on the Piranha 6×6 chassis.

The initial order will also include a comprehensive range of equipment and logistical packages, such as training simulators, spare parts, and additional services.

The Bundestag’s procurement committee, which oversees military acquisitions, is expected to review this order this Wednesday.

The plan is to secure the initial 274 vehicles from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) on a firm contract, with an option for an additional 82 units.

The German government is anticipated to allocate just over €3.5 billion to develop and produce these vehicles, covering not only the vehicles themselves but also training systems and a full suite of logistical support.

The Bundeswehr plans to replace some of its current light 4-wheel reconnaissance vehicles, the Fennek, with the next-generation reconnaissance vehicle.

As previously reported, the future reconnaissance vehicle will be based on the 6×6 Piranha wheeled platform from the European defense company General Dynamics European Land Systems.

Meanwhile, the weapon systems for the Luchs 2 will be procured under a separate project, which will also be discussed on Wednesday.

A framework agreement with Rheinmetall is expected to be concluded, worth approximately EUR 100 million, to purchase up to 310 Oerlikon KBA 25 x 137 mm automatic cannons.

The cannon will be installed in a remotely operated combat module developed by Valhalla Turrets from Slovenia.
