Russian elites are shocked by the alleged suicide of former Russian Minister of Transport and ex-governor of the Kursk region Roman Starovoit and seriously fear for their lives. According to Faridaily’s sources , some members of the elite perceived this as a "demarche" towards the Kremlin.
Sources close to government circles say fear has been growing among the elite for years amid harsh sentences, criminal cases and increased pressure from security forces. One former official compared the current situation to the Stalin-era repressions, where "anyone caught in the millstones of the system is doomed." The interlocutor recalled the life sentences and longer terms given to former high-ranking officials, and also mentioned the death of the leader of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose helicopter crashed some time after the Wagnerites’ unsuccessful attempt to march on Moscow. In addition, Russia is undergoing a massive wave of nationalizations. For example, last week alone, the state gained control over assets worth more than $50 billion. Among them is the company Yuzhuralzoloto, formerly owned by billionaire Konstantin Strukov, who, according to Russian media, was detained while trying to leave Russia. Political scientist Abbas Gallyamov believes that "the system is beginning to devour itself": Strukov, despite years of financial support from United Russia, still found himself unprotected. Earlier this year, the owner of the Rusagro agricultural holding, Vadim Moshkovich, was also arrested and accused of corruption. Part of his company has already come under state control. Representatives of the Russian elite have found themselves in a kind of trap: due to sanctions and unspoken restrictions from the Kremlin, travel abroad is effectively closed to them. Starovoit’s death has become such a sensitive topic that even his former colleagues are afraid to express condolences publicly. "If you show softness, you will be considered a traitor ," said one former high-ranking official.
Let us recall that Starovoit’s body was found on July 7 in his own car. The funeral of the former official took place on July 11 in St. Petersburg, the entire ceremony was held under heavy security.
