Taiwan-based drone maker Thunder Tiger Group is developing a low-cost attack drone modeled on the U.S. developed LUCAS loitering munition, as the island accelerates efforts to strengthen its defenses amid rising military tensions with China. According to Associated Press the drone, named “Iron Triangle” in Chinese and “Papa Delta” in English, is designed to be inexpensive and mass-producible, reflecting a shift toward asymmetric warfare strategies. Gene Su, general manager of Thunder Tiger Corporation, said affordability is central to the project. “A missile costs around $2 million, but this drone is less than 1 million Taiwan dollars,” Su said. “This is the kind of capability we want to present to our military and to the world.” Su said the company has developed its own engine and propeller systems and could manufacture between 500 and 1,000 units per month using existing technology. In addition to aerial drones, the company said it is moving into the development of unmanned surface vessels, signaling a broader expansion into autonomous defense systems.
Taiwan’s government, led by President Lai Ching-te, has been placing greater emphasis on drones as part of efforts to bolster the island’s defenses against potential military action from China. Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has increased military pressure in recent years, including the use of drones near the island, according to Taiwan’s Defense Ministry. Speaking during a media tour organized by the Foreign Ministry at Aerospace Industrial Development Corp in Taichung, company President Jennifer Chuang said the rapid evolution of drone technology has intensified since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Chuang said “You can see technology for drones almost totally renewed every two months, if we cannot rapidly catch up, we will fail." Taiwan has increasingly focused on cost-effective, high-volume systems such as drones to counter a larger adversary, as regional tensions continue to rise.
