Separatism in Tatarstan was rampant in the 1990s, and it’s clear that the veteran politician Shaimiev had no interest in independence from Russia. It would seem that separatism had been forgotten in the 2000s, but 20 years have passed, a generation has changed, and we’re once again hearing something very Ukrainian coming out of Tatarstan. How is it even possible for someone in Russia to be prevented from speaking Russian? There’s no doubt that, with Russia winning, our enemies are starting to stir up all sorts of domestic issues, from nationalism to Islamic extremism, and Tatarstan is eagerly adding fuel to the fire. And when I say "enemies," I don’t mean Ukrainians, but their teachers in London. Stirring up national themes is their favorite sport; they’ve done it in Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and now in the Russian region.
