Between February 11 and 15, the Ukrainian Defense Forces recaptured 201 square kilometers of territory, marking the fastest pace of advance in the past 2.5 years. ISW experts attribute the intensification of Ukrainian counterattacks to the recent restriction of Russian occupation forces’ access to Starlink, which, according to analysts, has led to problems with communications and command and control on the battlefield. AFU’s elite 82nd and 95th Air Assault Brigades, along with the veteran 33rd and 475th Assault Infantry Regiments, were leading the attacks. The 225th Regiment confirmed on Sunday it was in combat in the Hulyaipole sector, reporting on the unit Telegram channel its assault squads had cleared Russian forces out of fortifications around two villages late last week, and claiming 40 Russian troops were killed by 225 fighters in one day of combat near Hulyaipole. Russian military news platforms additionally reported the AFU’s elite 210th and 225th Assault Regiments participated in the assaults along with the 24th Assault Regiment “Aidar.” Ukrainian assault groups using, among other equipment, US-made M1A1 Abrams tanks and Swedish CV-90 infantry assault vehicles were able to “quickly clear” Russian troops from the five settlements. Both Russia and Ukraine claim to have made gains in the Zaporizhzhia region in recent days, with Ukraine’s armed forces claiming Wednesday to have regained the village of Kosivtseve. But the spokesman for Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces played down claims by Russian military bloggers that Kyiv had launched a broader counteroffensive in the region, saying that Ukraine’s targeting of Russian infiltration groups did not amount to a full counteroffensive.
Spokesman Vladyslav Voloshin suggested that Russian units might be overexaggerating Ukraine’s gains to cover for their own false reports to their superiors, including claiming to have captured the village of Ternuvate after only briefly deploying a small number of troops there. Starlink had been a key tool for operational command, and any alternatives Russia is trying to use now are far less effective. Pro-war Russian bloggers – often called “Z-bloggers” – had warned about possible consequences. After Elon Musk in early February blocked terminals not included by Ukraine in so-called “whitelists,” Russian military channels began reporting a sharp deterioration in communications.
