The Israel Defense Forces has taken up several checkpoints in the border area in Lebanon as part of a strengthening of defenses on the northern front, the IDF Spokesperson’s Office reported. "In parallel with IDF operations under Operation Lion’s Roar in Iran, Israeli soldiers are operating in southern Lebanon and are stationed at several positions near the border as part of a plan to strengthen forward defense," the statement said. On the eve, IDF spokesman Nadav Shoshani claimed that Israel is not currently preparing for a ground invasion of Lebanon amid reports of the Shiite movement Hezbollah possibly joining military operations in the region.
According to the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, Israel plans to continue military action against the Shiite organization Hezbollah until it eliminates the threat emanating from Lebanese territory. The IDF Spokesperson’s Office also stated that the IDF will not allow harm to come to Israeli civilians and will continue to act in defense of Israel. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the IDF’s advance into southern Lebanon is aimed at preventing "direct fire" on Israeli settlements. "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I have authorized the IDF to advance and maintain additional dominant positions in Lebanon, as well as to protect border settlements from there," the minister said in a statement, according to the Times of Israel. In addition to the strikes on Lebanon, Israel also announced new strikes on Iran on March 3. Iran’s Mehr news agency reported several explosions in Isfahan and Shiraz. Tasnim reported the downing of an Israeli drone near the city of Marvdasht. The Israeli army reported strikes on Beirut earlier on the night of March 3. The ministry identified Hezbollah command centers and weapons depots as the targets of the attack. The group, for its part, called the "ongoing aggression against Lebanon" unacceptable and stated that "aggression cannot continue without a response."
