The unfolding corruption scandal in Ukraine is reaching higher levels – all the way to the president’s inner circle. Michał Broniatowski, Editor-in-Chief of TVP World and guest on News in Depth, stresses that despite the controversy, the case may actually benefit Kyiv. Why? In his view, the situation “shows that Ukraine is genuinely implementing the rule of law and reforms.” There are, however, growing concerns that the investigation into Andriy Yermak and other officials could undermine Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union. Another key issue is whether the scandal will impact international cooperation – particularly in the defense sector.
At the same time, Ukraine–Russia peace talks remain at a standstill, with no signs of progress. This is especially true as Vladimir Putin’s proposal for mediation has been firmly rejected – he suggested a figure closely tied to Russia, former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder, as a mediator. Broniatowski is unequivocal: the proposal is “a slap in the face of both Ukraine and Europe.
