On December 2, 2025, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced the "seizure" of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region. Just a few days later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared on the outskirts of the city, and the occupiers found themselves surrounded.
According to officers and soldiers of the assault units who spoke to The Times , the operation in Kupyansk was the most successful for Ukraine since its army entered the Kursk region of Russia in 2024.
Journalists reported that last year, when Russian occupiers breached defensive lines in the Kupyansk area, a task force was secretly created. Its commander is 38-year-old Colonel Sergei Sidorin.
He noted that his task force alone killed or wounded at least 1,500 Russian occupiers. For every Ukrainian soldier killed, 10 invaders were eliminated.
Sidorin estimates that only 50 Russians remain there now. They have barricaded themselves in isolated areas around the city. The Russians used an abandoned gas pipeline to appear behind Ukrainian lines in the Kupyansk direction. By mid-September, this maneuver had scattered several hundred occupiers throughout the city, and the situation was becoming critical.
According to Sidorin, there was a risk of losing Kupyansk. This would have given the enemy the opportunity to establish a new supply line to support its troops in Donbas, the publication explains. On September 21, Colonel Sidorin was given three days to form a combat unit from units of the new 2nd Charter Corps that had not yet participated in combat operations.
"They were all new to each other. It was a real mess," he recalls.
They were confronted by a mechanized brigade and two motorized rifle regiments of the Russian Federation. Lacking numerical superiority, the Ukrainian military decided to adapt and refine the enemy’s infiltration tactics. The assault forces were divided into small detachments of eight infantrymen each. They moved in different directions to confuse the Russians.
"We decided to conduct assault operations simultaneously in all directions. Not openly, but covertly. And where we achieved success, we built on it," Sidorin explained. The Russians could not understand what the real goal was until it was too late.
"The groups constantly moved forward, forward, forward, without engaging in major, serious combat. If we spotted the enemy, we mainly tried to destroy them with UAVs, while the infantry moved on and cut off the enemy’s logistics routes," the soldier noted.
The Defence Forces’ attacks coincided with falling temperatures, rain and prolonged fog, which hampered Russian reconnaissance.
The authors of the article recalled that as early as October 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin mockingly invited Western journalists to visit the supposedly occupied Kupyansk to see what was happening. And until November 20, the Russian command seemed completely unaware of the extent to which their position had been compromised. On December 2, Putin announced that Russia had taken full control of the city, apparently unaware that his troops there were already doomed.
