The European Union has agreed on a new raft of sanctions against Russia targeting its shadow fleet of oil tankers and banning its imports of liquefied natural gas.
According to Associated Press European Council President António Costa said the 27-nation bloc approved the 19th package of sanctions early Thursday.
“Today, in this European Council, we will take the political decision to ensure the financial needs of Ukraine for 2026 and 2027, including for acquisition of military equipment. And this is a very strong message to Russia,” he said to the media in Brussels.
“We said repeatedly that we will support Ukraine as long as necessary and whatever it takes, and now we have concretized this and today we will take the political decision to ensure your financial needs for 2026 and 2027.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Costa’s support and reiterated the need to put more pressure on Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
“Together, we have to pressure on Putin, stop this war pressure. It’s been sanctions packages, long range air defense and of course, financial support, we will speak together today. This is the main thing that together, thank you for this unity, thank you for the support,” he said.
The move comes a day after US President Donald Trump’s administration announced new sanctions against Russia’s oil industry that are aimed at moving Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and ending Moscow’s war on Ukraine.
Energy revenue is the linchpin of Russia’s economy, allowing Putin to pour money into the armed forces without worsening inflation for everyday people and avoiding a currency collapse.
The new EU measures took almost a month to decide.
The sanctions agreement was sealed at a Thursday morning meeting of EU ambassadors, just a few hours before Zelenskyy joins his European counterparts for the one-day summit, as they press for a ceasefire to halt almost four years of fighting.
