Amid rising tensions between Russia and NATO, Britain has once again deployed its navy to track Russian ships returning from the Mediterranean. The Royal Navy carried out a two-day operation to monitor Russian naval vessels passing through the English Channel, LBC radio reports. The operation involved the patrol ships HMS Mersey and HMS Severn, as well as a Wildcat naval helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron. British forces were tasked with tracking the corvette Boykiy and the Baltic Fleet auxiliary vessel General Skobelev. Following continuous NATO monitoring in the Bay of Biscay, HMS Mersey assumed responsibility for operations as Russian vessels approached UK waters. HMS Severn later joined the mission off the Isle of Wight, operating in close coordination with air support. British Armed Forces Secretary Al Carnes said that with this operation, the British side sent a clear signal to the Kremlin. "With this operation, our sailors have once again sent a signal to Putin: we know exactly what his fleet is doing ," he said. He said that whenever Russian ships approach the UK’s shores, the Royal Navy is ready to monitor their actions, deter threats and ensure the protection of national interests. The combination of surface ships and aerial reconnaissance allowed the Royal Navy to maintain a complete operational picture of the situation. Data from onboard sensors was transmitted to command in real time, which was especially important given the high traffic volume in the English Channel – one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. HMS Mersey’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Dan Wardle, said the operation was a testament to the crew’s high level of readiness at the start of the year. A Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron played a key role in the operation. Ross Gallagher, Senior Observer and Deputy Squadron Commander, emphasized the unit’s high level of combat readiness. "We ensured precise surveillance, rapid transmission of information, and tactical clarity throughout the entire transit of Russian vessels ," he noted. He said the squadron was specifically designed for such missions and was always ready to support both the UK’s national interests and the efforts of its NATO allies. The corvette "Boikiy," commissioned in 2013, is part of Russia’s Baltic Fleet. The tanker "General Skobelev," with a displacement of approximately 16,000 tons, was built in 2008 and, according to NATO, has been repeatedly used to transport Russian oil from the Baltic region to third countries, including the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean, the Gibraltar-based patrol ship HMS Dagger tracked the sanctioned oil tanker Grinch as it passed through the Strait of Gibraltar. The vessel was later inspected with the participation of the French navy. UK Defence Secretary John Healey said the fight against Russia’s "shadow fleet" had become a priority.
