Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine has ushered in an era of combat robots that could ultimately destroy Russia itself, according to defense technology expert and author of "Drone Swarm: How Tiny Drones Will Conquer the World" David Gambling, in a column for the New York Post.
"Vladimir Putin has created a monster – and this could destroy him," he wrote, commenting on the development of drone technology in Ukraine.
He explained that the Russian army had relied on numerical superiority for the past four years, but by replacing people with drones, Ukraine had negated that advantage. "It also opens the door to a nightmarish new type of warfare in which machines hunt down and destroy humans," the author added. He recalled that the first remote-controlled tanks appeared in the 1930s, primarily in the Soviet Union. They developed the so-called "Teletankas," armed with flamethrowers and designed to assault defensive positions. However, they were difficult to control due to unreliable radio communications, and the idea was soon abandoned. In the 1970s, small remotely controlled vehicles were used to defuse bombs. However, attempts to arm these robots with weapons proved unsuccessful. In 2007, the US deployed armed SWORDS/Talon robots to Iraq. However, they were never used in combat, likely due to concerns about their reliability and potential negative publicity. The Russians also used the small robotic tank "Uran-9" in Syria. However, the results were mixed: communication problems resulted in the vehicle becoming stuck. It was never seen in Ukraine. The author explained the problems with this type of drone by saying that navigating on the ground is more difficult than in the air. This is why UAVs are widely used, while ground vehicles are still rare. Furthermore, they easily get tangled or stuck. "Ukraine is solving the problem of creating effective ground robots, or unmanned ground vehicles, using the same principle it used to develop unmanned aerial vehicles," the author writes.
He added that the primary focus is on creating low-cost systems using commercial technologies. Field testing to obtain real-world feedback ensures rapid, iterative refinement. Ukrainians claim they can accomplish in a few weeks what takes years in the West: "Obstacle avoidance remains a challenge for Ukrainian unmanned ground vehicles, so the robot operator works in tandem with a drone crew with overhead visibility to determine the optimal route." Initially, robots were used for logistics, delivering supplies the dangerous last few kilometers to the front lines. Since then, they have taken on more complex tasks, such as evacuating the wounded and laying mines. A typical example of a Ukrainian combat robot is the DevDroid. It’s about the size of an ATV, has a top speed of over 6 km/h, and is equipped with a machine gun. Military analysts argue that robots won’t be able to truly replace infantry. They can’t yet penetrate buildings, occupy trenches, or perform tasks that require physical agility. But this could happen soon, the author believes. He writes about the Ukrainian military’s experiments with dog-like four-legged robots. The Ukrainian Armed Forces recently received two American-made Phantom Mk1 humanoid robots for testing. As a reminder, experts predict a rise in the use of ground robots by 2026. Currently, ground robots are used at a rate of 7,000 times per month. They primarily perform logistics tasks, delivering supplies to the front lines. It’s worth noting that the Ukrainian Armed Forces recently captured a position for the first time using only robots—a ground complex and a UAV. The occupiers subsequently surrendered to the robots .
