Thousands of Kurds from Turkey have reportedly passed the imposed barriers and borders after clashes with Turkish police, and are heading toward Syria’s Kurdish region of Roja to defend Kurds. The move is part of mobilization efforts in support of Roja across the broader Kurdish community in other regions and abroad. Video footage circulated in social media shows a large crowd of people crossing the Turkish-Syria border, chanting slogans: “Roja is not alone.” The development came amid increasing reports about clashes between government forces of the Syrian transitional government and Kurdish-led militants Syrian Democratic Forces, known as SDF. Government forces have been advancing into areas long held by the SDF, and clashes have erupted particularly around key prisons holding Islamic State detainees, where hundreds of prisoners have escaped amid the fighting. The SDF has been mobilizing support to defend Roja amid fierce fighting. Meanwhile, Kurdish demonstrators gathered in the streets across the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq on Monday evening following these clashes.
