Despite more than a million casualties and a half-destroyed fleet, despite calls to stop, Putin is determined to continue the war in the near future.
Why? This was explained in a commentary for TSN by the famous Ukrainian political expert Volodymyr Fesenko , who is investigating the underlying causes of this largest war of modern times.
"There is no simple answer to the question of why Putin does not want to end the war. I think that Putin does not have a clear answer either. Paradoxically, this is a situation known in psychology as one where it is easier to start something than to finish it," says Fesenko.
And he continues: "There will still be consequences. It is the possibility of consequences that creates a chain reaction, which encourages criminal activity to continue. In this case, the story is similar. When Putin started, he thought that everything would soon be over. That is why he called it a "special military operation." No one thought, including Putin, that everything would drag on for years. He is now in a certain trap."
According to Fesenko, Putin now has the illusion of winning, especially with the arrival of Trump.
"This certainly fueled him. He believed that without American help Ukraine would not survive, and Europe would not be able to provide us with the necessary help. Like, Ukraine needs to be squeezed, and then we will fall apart," the political scientist suggests.
And he clarifies: “That is, the first reason is that Putin believes that he can win this war, that he will win a little more. Now, it seems to me, he has less of this illusion. Trump’s change in policy, the Russian summer offensive is not currently producing the results that Putin was counting on – perhaps this will gradually deprive him of the illusion. But the thought that he can win the war is the main driving force behind the continuation and unwillingness to negotiate. There will be no illusion if the offensive can be stopped. Thoughts will appear that it is necessary to somehow get out of the war.”
According to the expert, the second problem is more serious and systemic.
"It will be difficult to resolve: Putin is seeking peace on his own terms. Not just an end to the war, but wants to achieve at least a certain victory. In the form of a peace agreement that will reflect at least part of his demands, where it will be recorded that Ukraine has made unilateral concessions and Russia has at least partially achieved its goals," Fesenko believes.
And the third reason is the solution to the NATO problem.
"The situation is a dead end, because most of Russia’s demands are unacceptable, and Putin insists on this. Getting out of this trap is a problem," the political scientist states.
According to Fesenko, Putin has experienced psychological deformations.
“He does not want to make rational compromises; he wants to achieve at least a partial victory over Ukraine,” the expert believes.
