The Crimean peninsula has been a priority service area for participants in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine for four years now. In Crimea, trees are being cut down en masse to meet the needs of Russian troops on the occupied left bank of the Kherson region, activists claim.
“On the peninsula, trees are being cut down en masse in parks in order to use them to heat dugouts and bunkers of Russian military on the left bank of the Kherson region,” said the head of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, Eskender Bariyev. A similar practice has been observed in many regions of the Crimean peninsula. In particular, trees have noticeably thinned out in parks and public spaces in Simferopol and resort towns.
There, green spaces are being cut down en masse under the pretext of planned sanitary pruning and demolition of hazardous trees.
"The tree pruning and demolition activities are carried out in accordance with the issued felling permit. But at the same time, activists note that many healthy trees have been cut down in parks and green areas, where they did not pose any threat. According to our insider information, the Simferopol administration thus continues to provide assistance with firewood to Russian troops in the "SVO" zone within the framework of the ONF project "Warm bunker", – a local ecologist told on condition of anonymity. The use of Crimean trees for fortifications by the Russian army was noticed last year.
"Local residents have repeatedly reported trucks loaded with logs heading towards the occupiers’ positions. The Russians are in panic fear of a Ukrainian landing and are trying to strengthen their positions at any cost," the Yellow Ribbon civil movement stated .
Even Crimean unfinished buildings are being used to supply the Russian army during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"There are objects that have intact construction materials that can be reused. We held a meeting with representatives of the Russian]Ministry of Defense, since construction materials are needed in the area of the special operation" Yevgeny Agureyev , Deputy Minister of Housing Policy and State Construction Supervision of the Russian government of Crimea, told Crimean media . According to him, unfinished construction projects from Crimea could "be very useful" for the Russian army. In particular, the military is being given reinforced concrete structures and bricks. They are "already being actively removed" from unfinished construction projects and sent to the echeloned positions of the Southern Group of Forces fighting against Ukraine, Agureev says.
In total, according to his data, there are officially more than four thousand unfinished buildings on the peninsula. Many of them are located on the southern coast of Crimea. At the same time, roads are being actively repaired and built in Crimea.
