U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that American troops would not be deployed to Ukraine, but Washington might offer air support as part of a potential peace agreement with Russia.
His comments were reported by Sky News.
According to Trump, U.S. assistance could be included in a broader package of security guarantees currently being discussed, including by European nations.
“When it comes to security, the Europeans are prepared to put boots on the ground. We’re ready to support them in certain areas – most likely from the air,” Trump said.
While the President did not go into detail, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that U.S. air support remained “an option and a possibility” within the framework of future security assurances for Ukraine.
She made the statement during a briefing on August 19th, when she was repeatedly asked about the possible role the United States might play in providing security guarantees for Ukraine. However, like President Trump before her, she did not offer any specific details.
“The President has made it clear that U.S. troops will not be in Ukraine, but we can certainly assist with coordination and potentially provide other forms of security guarantees to our European allies,” Leavitt concluded.
