The invasion of Ukraine has become a trap for the Kremlin, where initial plans to restore the Russian Empire have given way to a war for the regime’s survival. This was stated by military analyst Oleksandr Musienko, a serviceman in the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He recalled that any large-scale decision made without taking into account real possibilities inevitably leads to a systemic crisis, the consequences of which become irreversible. "What Putin has done is a catastrophic mistake of strategic proportions, which will have, and already has, strategic consequences for the Russian Federation. Perhaps some don’t yet realize it, perhaps some refuse to acknowledge this truth, but it is true," the guest noted. It was precisely because Putin initially misjudged the strategic situation in 2022 that the collapse of the plan to seize Ukraine was predetermined. "What was the original strategy based on? A quick operation, a so-called ‘special military operation,’ the overthrow of the legitimate government, legally elected in Kyiv. A week, two, three—and by the end of March, there would be celebrations, praise for Putin, and so on. But that didn’t happen. The resistance the Ukrainian people were capable of putting up, and the level of national resistance, were not taken into account. Putin’s goal was to show off to all of Europe, to intimidate, to seize Ukraine, to continue the expansion of the Russian Empire, to restore it. Putin is delusional about this, he lives in history, he closes himself off, isolates himself, and lives in his own imagination. And he had such plans," Musienko recalled. The collapse of the Russian Federation’s original plan led to the war ceasing to be a tool for achieving foreign policy goals, becoming the system’s only form of existence and a means of maintaining power within the country. "Russia currently has no strategy. Essentially, it all boils down to the fact that war is a means of survival exclusively for the Kremlin regime, not for Russia. Because strategically, this war offers no benefits for Russia. There are colossal losses, the economy is suffering. Potential—how can it grow? Victory? Where in Russian propaganda do you see the names of settlements like Pokrovsky or Kupyansky? Instead, they’ve switched to threats to Europe—those are always abstract threats," the speaker emphasized. The fact that the Kremlin is actively trying to threaten European countries also suggests that even the collapse in Ukraine has not forced Putin to admit his mistake. "When the leader of the state they want to project sits and scrutinizes each village and battlefield on the map, and at the same time says, ‘We will conquer Europe,’ it just doesn’t add up. It’s quite difficult to piece together this dissonance. So now it’s simply a war to preserve the regime. A war largely out of desperation. Because if not war, then what? Discuss the water supply in Pskov?" Musienko commented. An indicator of the Kremlin regime’s loss of control over the situation is the tightening of censorship, with which the regime is trying to block the growing flow of uncomfortable questions from its own society. "Let’s look at what questions Putin was asked during the hotline. What were on the screens? That’s only what the censors missed. And the presence of uncomfortable questions also suggests they failed to cope. The flood is so intense that they can’t filter it out or block it. And now Putin is continuing the war to preserve himself and his regime. Not just to strengthen it, but simply to preserve it," the military analyst emphasized.
