U.S. troops in Germany are to defend NATO’s eastern flank | News in Depth

U.S. President Donald Trump clashed with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over Iran again, continuing to stoke tensions between Washington and Berlin, this time by implying he might pull the substantial U.S. troop presence from Germany.

“We reached the point when these statements of President Trump (…) are simply not taken seriously (…) Europeans just look at these statements, they shrug their shoulders, and say: ‘Donald Trump is being Donald Trump’,” TVP World’s Europe Editor, Marcin Zaborowski, told News in Depth host Benjamin Lee during an interview.

Is Trump signaling a real policy shift or repeating familiar rhetoric? Why did criticism of U.S. policy on Iran spark such a sharp reaction toward Germany? How indispensable is Germany to U.S. military operations in Europe, and why are European leaders choosing caution over confrontation? Would Poland be a beneficiary of a redeployment of U.S. troops, and if so, would it sign up for it? And does this episode meaningfully advance European defense autonomy, or expose its limits?

Join us as we unpack the spat, Germany’s strategic role in NATO, Europe’s changing security calculations, and what Trump’s threats really mean for the Alliance’s future.
