As reported Fanil Sarvarov, the head of the operational training department of the Russian Armed Forces, who died when a car was blown up in the parking lot at home, became one of the highest-ranking Russian soldiers killed in an attempt in the Russian rear after the start of the war in Ukraine. The same rank of lieutenant general was held by the head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection forces, Igor Kirillov, who died in Moscow as a result of an attempt a year ago. Kirillov, 54, was under sanctions from several countries, including the U.K. and Canada, for his actions in Moscow’s war in Ukraine. On Monday, Ukraine’s Security Service, or SBU, opened a criminal investigation against him, accusing him of directing the use of banned chemical weapons.
An official with the SBU said the agency was behind the attack. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information, described Kirillov as a “war criminal and an entirely legitimate target.”
Another lieutenant general Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in April. The Investigative Committee said that Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, was killed by an explosive device placed in his car in Balashikha, just outside Moscow, Russia’s capital.
The committee’s spokesperson, Svetlana Petrenko, said that the explosive device was rigged with shrapnel.
Sarvarov was awarded the rank of lieutenant general by order of Vladimir Putin in May last year.
In his biography it is said that he was born in 1969 in the Perm region, he graduated from the Kazan Higher Tank Command School. From 1992 to 2003, he participated in the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, as well as the first and second Chechen wars. In 2015-2016 he was in Syria.
In 2016, Sarvarov was appointed the head of the Department of Operational Training of the Ministry of Defense. This office, according to the website of the Ministry of Defense, is involved in the planning and organization of exercises, as well as the organization and planning of daily activities of the military administration and officials of the Ministry of Defense for the month.
In 2018, he attended a reception in the Kremlin of officers appointed to high command positions, with the participation of Vladimir Putin, according to the analysis of "Agents".
Six months before Sarvarov, in April of this year, Yaroslav Moskalik, the deputy head of the main operational department of the General Staff, who participated in the negotiations with Ukraine in 2015, was killed in a car explosion. And almost exactly a year ago, on December 17, 2024, Kirillov died in Moscow.
