Ukraine has called on Russia to extend the Easter ceasefire, stressing that Kyiv will maintain silence and respond only in a reciprocal manner, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed on Saturday. He explained that if Russian forces refrain from attacks across air, land, and sea, Ukraine will likewise hold its fire. Zelenskyy added that Ukrainian troops remain prepared for any scenario on the front lines. He noted that Kyiv has repeatedly proposed different ceasefire options, emphasizing that Easter should serve as a period of calm and security. According to him, prolonging the truce could mark a first step toward meaningful peace, and Ukraine has formally conveyed this proposal. The president also said he discussed the conduct of Ukrainian forces under ceasefire conditions with Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He confirmed that Russia has been informed about Ukraine’s mirror-response approach and the suggestion to extend the truce beyond Easter.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin ordered a temporary Easter ceasefire running from 4 p.m. on April 11 until the end of April 12, instructing Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov to halt hostilities during that period. Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine is ready to mirror Russia’s actions during the truce. While Moscow previously indicated it would not extend the ceasefire, it has also outlined conditions it claims could allow peace to be achieved immediately. Despite statements about ceasefire, skepticism remains high, as previous ceasefire attempts have often been short-lived or violated. Ukrainian officials stress that their forces are prepared for any developments on the battlefield, while also signaling openness to a genuine and sustained halt in fighting if it is respected by both sides. Fighting continues across eastern Ukraine, with some of the most intense clashes reported near Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, where Ukrainian forces are attempting to push forward despite sustained Russian pressure. The front line remains highly volatile, with both sides reporting ongoing artillery exchanges, drone strikes, and ground assaults, indicating that the overall situation has not significantly stabilized.
