Ukraine has launched a drone attack on an aircraft repair facility deep in Russia. According to accounts circulating on social media, unmanned aerial vehicles struck an aviation repair plant in Staraya Russa, located in Russia’s northwestern Novgorod region. The attack hit the plant’s primary workshop, though local officials have yet to issue any statements. Social media sources also claim that around seven drones were intercepted during the incident. Situated 650 km north of Ukraine, Staraya Russia plant is about 200 km from both St. Petersburg to the north and the Estonian border to the west. The 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant in Staraya Russa is known for servicing and maintaining both civilian and military aircraft, and is considered a key enterprise in Russia’s aviation repair sector. It performs comprehensive repairs and modernization of aircraft systems and ranks among the largest recipients of state defense contracts in the Novgorod region. Aleksandr Dronov, governor of Novgorod Oblast, acknowledged that the region had been targeted by a drone strike and stated that air defense units were actively responding. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that its air defenses had shot down 206 Ukrainian drones overnight – a routine formulation officials use when describing such incidents. The strike on Staraya Russia plant was the second drone attack on a Russian aviation facility in the past two days. On March 16, Ukrainian air force hit Aviastar aircraft manufacturing plant in Ulianovsk. Ukrainian forces have recently carried out strikes on Russian-linked targets in occupied territories of Ukraine. In southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, a drone storage facility and a logistics hub near Osypenko and Prymorsk were reportedly hit. Attacks also targeted Russian troop concentrations across several fronts, including near Kupiansk in northeastern Kharkiv region, as well as in the eastern Donetsk region around Shakhove, Udachne, and Pokrovsk, and in the Kherson region near Petrivka. Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian drones had also struck targets in Ukraine’s Russia’s annexed Crimean Peninsula, focusing primarily on air defense systems. The reported damage included two radar installations – Protivnik and Parol – as well as a launcher from an S-400 system.
