Ukraine has eliminated Russian military assets worth roughly $28 million overnight near Hulyaipole in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. Among the destroyed equipment were multiple rocket launcher systems as well as a scarce and high-value Zoopark counter-battery radar. Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service stated that pilots from its Phoenix unit carried out the strikes in the early hours of April 5. They identified and destroyed three multiple launch rocket systems: two BM-21 Grad units and one BM-27 Uragan. The BM-21 Grad, a Soviet-era 122mm system introduced in the 1960s, can unleash up to 40 rockets in rapid succession from a truck-mounted launcher. The larger BM-27 Uragan, a 220mm system, is typically used to fire cluster munitions and has a significantly extended range. In addition to these launchers, Ukrainian forces also targeted and destroyed a Zoopark-1 radar system. This type of radar is considered both rare and strategically valuable; Ukrainian officials estimate that only around 15 such systems have been taken out since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. The Zoopark-1 is designed to track incoming artillery fire, detecting mortars, shells, and even certain missiles at varying distances, and then calculating their points of origin for counter-strikes. Each system is estimated to be worth about $23 million. The Zoopark system has been present in Ukraine for years. It was first publicly documented in the Donbas region in 2016 by the volunteer intelligence group InformNapalm, though Ukrainian military intelligence later indicated it had identified the system there as early as 2014. Russian forces have also deployed Zoopark systems in other conflict zones, including Syria, where such equipment has reportedly been tested under combat conditions. Although drone footage released by Ukrainian sources appears to show the destruction of the equipment, independent verification of when and where the video was recorded has not been confirmed. Ukrainian officials emphasized that these losses are in addition to the routine daily targets struck by border guard units operating continuously along the front. Located about 87 kilometers east of the regional capital Zaporizhzh, Hulyaipole has become increasingly significant on the battlefield. Analysts caution that if Russian forces fully secure the area, it could pave the way for further advances toward Zaporizhzhia. Since late 2025, open-source mapping suggests that Russian troops have made notable gains and now control a large portion of the town. It’s worth noting that Ukrainian troops have intensified strikes on Russian military and strategic facilities as part of a broader strategy to undermine the Kremlin’s war efforts.
