Ukrainian troops operating under the “East” Operational Command have eliminated over 6,500 Russian troops, and injured 4,000 others over the past month. This information comes from Major Hryhorii Shapoval, who serves as the command’s spokesperson, in remarks given to Ukrinform. The “East” group oversees counteroffensives in the east of Ukraine. Shapoval stated that preliminary estimates indicate the group’s forces neutralized more than 6,500 Russian soldiers within that period. Shapoval also emphasized that Ukrainian Defense Forces are continuing sustained operations in the eastern region, steadily reducing the opposing side’s manpower and overall combat effectiveness. In addition, he noted that close to 4,000 Russian military personnel were counted among the wounded or otherwise incapacitated. “East” Operational Command is one of the key regional military groupings of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, responsible for defending and conducting operations along some of the most heavily contested sectors of the front line in the country’s east. It oversees Ukrainian forces operating in areas that have seen continuous fighting since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, including parts of the Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Luhansk directions, depending on shifting battlefield conditions. It should be noted that March appears to have been a month of continued high attrition for Russian forces, with heavy casualties and equipment losses contributing to operational strain. Independent and official tallies vary, but all point to sustained and significant losses on the battlefield throughout March 2026. Russian advances stalled in the past month and Ukraine maintained pressure across multiple sectors of the front, slowing Russian offensive operations. Earlier in March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that Ukrainian forces successfully blunted a planned Russian offensive in March, describing the frontline situation as favorable to Ukraine. “Overall, the frontline is holding. The situation is complex, but the best it has been in the last 10 months,” Zelenskiy said, citing Ukrainian and British intelligence. Earlier reports from the General Staff indicated that, as of April 3, total Russian losses since the beginning of the invasion had reached approximately 1,301,260 personnel. In addition, Ukraine has taken over 10,000 Russian servicemen prisoner since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to open-source estimates from multiple Ukrainian and independent reporting projects.
