Military expert, retired colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, military pilot-instructor Roman Svitan stated that today the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the front are in a state of active defense, and the transition to the mode of counter-offensive operations at the tactical level is possible under certain conditions.
"The whole point of active defense comes down to counterattacks, as a result of which some lost positions are returned or new ones are taken. But all these are tactical-level operations, 3-4 km deep, no more than that, 5-7 km – that’s if you try hard enough," he emphasized in an interview with Glavred . The expert says that the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not yet have the capabilities to carry out operational-level actions, since operational-tactical operations must be carried out with the support of aviation.
"We must have at least two NATO aviation brigades: Mirage, F-16, Gripen. Therefore, at this stage, it is not worth talking about operational-tactical breakthroughs – this will definitely not happen this year, but will only be possible next year. By the end of 2025 or early 2026, the second F-16 brigade will arrive, and then it will be possible to plan operational-tactical operations with access to the coast of the Sea of Azov and the liberation of the same Crimea by land," he does not rule out.
The interlocutor admitted that this year the Ukrainian Armed Forces could conduct offensive operations using aviation and missile components, that is, long-range weapons.
"Let’s say we can take on Crimea and not give the Russians a break. And then, after several months of nightly and daily shelling with our long-range weapons, we will be able to inflict serious damage on the Russian occupiers in Crimea. And this will already be considered an offensive operation, and at a strategic level. In this way, we have the opportunity to push through the enemy," Svitan added.
Recall that earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would launch a counterattack , and the Russians would be pressed to the border. Further expansion of the territory controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces is possible soon, Alexander Kovalenko does not rule out.
