Ukrainian long-range drone operations appear to have reached deep into the russian rear, with a reported strike on a petrochemical plant in Sterlitamak, Bashkortostan. The attack was carried out by operators of the 1st Unmanned Systems Center.
The strike was confirmed by Robert Madyar Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces. In his statement, he emphasized not only the physical damage inflicted but also the psychological effect of the operation, highlighting the vulnerability of targets deep inside Russian territory. According to Ukrainian sources, the targeted facility plays a significant role in supporting russia’s defense industry. The petrochemical plant in Sterlitamak produces aviation fuel and additives for jet fuel, both of which are critical for sustaining air operations. Striking such production sites directly affects the operational capacity of Russian aviation. In addition, the facility is reportedly the only producer in Russia of neodymium-based synthetic rubber. This material is used in specialized industrial and military applications, making the plant a unique and strategically valuable target within Russia’s industrial base.
The distance of the strike, estimated at around 1,500 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled, underscores the growing reach of Ukraine’s unmanned systems. Such range suggests continued improvements in drone endurance, navigation, and strike capabilities.
As previously reported, Ukrainian forces carried out a coordinated night strike, targeting a series of high-value russian military sites in the temporarily occupied territory. The operation combined air-launched cruise missiles, guided bombs, and attack drones, reflecting a layered approach to striking both infrastructure and supply systems.
İn this case Ukrainian forces struck 76 Russian industrial targets in March using long-range weapons, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Telegram. "With the goal of lowering the enemy’s advance capabilities, we are maintaining a high strike intensity on military, defense industry, and other facilities on Russian territory that sustain the occupier’s activities," Syrskyi wrote.
Fifteen of the 76 targets struck were oil refining facilities, according to Syrskyi.
Ukraine’s attacks on Russian industrial facilities have been a feature of the war for years, but the effectiveness of the campaign, particularly when it comes to oil and gas refineries and transit points, has increased significantly in the past half year.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said friendly nations facing higher fuel prices have asked Ukraine to scale back such attacks.
The situation along the front line is more challenging. Syrskyi said Russian forces are pressing Ukrainian positions along the 1,200-kilometer front as spring conditions set in.
"We counter Russian quantity with Ukrainian quality in conducting military operations, forcing the opponent to play by our rules and delaying the timelines for fulfilling its objectives," Syrskyi added.
Despite talk of a Ukrainian counteroffensive in recent months, particularly in feebly held corners of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, Ukrainian soldiers have been bracing for a step-up in Russian assaults.
