Even Russian speedboats are often doomed by Ukrainian drones, according to military expert and retired Ukrainian Navy Colonel Vladislav Seleznev.
"The fact is that the islands on the Dnieper are mostly in the ‘gray zone,’ and anyone on those islands has no access to water… The groundwater is too close there. To effectively protect against missiles, drones, or guided bombs, you have to dig deep. And there’s sand there. And if you dig deeper than half a meter, the Dnieper’s water starts to seep in. In such conditions, talking about building powerful engineering structures or fortifications is pointless," he said on Ukrainian Radio.
According to him, any assault force that enters the island’s territory is, firstly, quite clearly visible via drones, and secondly, effective artillery fire adjustments are capable of destroying literally all life on these islands.
"Therefore, when we talk about the enemy’s use of unmanned boats, firstly, they can only be used in open waters that aren’t covered by ice. Secondly, our drone operators have demonstrated their skills and abilities quite effectively. Even the speed of Russian boats is often limited by the influence of Ukrainian drones," the analyst explained.
He confirmed that the Russians are seeking opportunities to put pressure on our defenders, in particular those defending the Dnieper near Kherson: "But for now, all the enemy’s attempts will turn into an information bubble, which is much talked about, but has no practical meaning."
He also answered the question of whether there is a threat of mass enemy penetration along the bottom of the former Kakhovka Reservoir.
"Yes, such a problem exists. For example, everyone is currently hearing about the fighting raging near the village of Stepnogorsk. But behind the scenes, the enemy is actively advancing along the shores of the former Kakhovka Reservoir and attempting to outflank our defenders in the Stepnogorsk area to the west," Seleznev stated.
According to him, the situation remains quite difficult.
"The former Kakhovka Reservoir is a considerable area, so the enemy has the ability to operate in this territory. But again, we’re talking about small assault or, most likely, sabotage and reconnaissance groups. Talking about a serious concentration of forces and resources is probably out of the question," he added.
Recently, the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade of the 30th Marine Corps used a river drone to hit a Russian boat. During the mission, the Barracuda surface drone covertly entered the area of enemy positions. At the first stage, it deployed specially designed mines that ensured control over the area. The Barracuda then conducted reconnaissance and identified targets that posed a threat. The boat operators delivered a precise strike on a river patrol boat equipped with a machine gun and on a logistics base. As a result, both targets were destroyed.
The modular system of the Barracuda river unmanned vehicle allows it to be equipped with various types of weapons. The use of ‘artificial intelligence elements’ has also been reported. The unmanned vehicle is also likely capable of performing logistical functions, such as delivering supplies to the islands of the Dnieper River.
