Ukraine’s Security Service, known as SBU, have struck oil pipeline station of the “Druzhba” system, which is used to produce export-grade crude oil, local media reported on Tuesday. According to SBU sources, the drones damaged five oil storage tanks, each with a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters of crude oil. The facility is used to blend high- and low-sulfur crude from different fields to produce export-grade Urals oil, making it an important part of Russia’s oil transportation infrastructure. The source noted that damage to such key hubs can reduce Russia’s ability to assemble export oil shipments and meet contractual obligations, which in turn could impact revenues used to finance the war against Ukraine. Meanwhile, The Moscow Times reported that Ukraine targeted an oil pipeline station linked to the “Druzhba” pipeline in the same region. The regional governor, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, confirmed an attack on an “industrial facility” but did not specify which one. Russia’s civil aviation authority reportedly temporarily closed airports in Samara and Ulyanovsk during the night. The “Samara” station is operated by “Transneft–Druzhba,” a subsidiary of the state-owned company Transneft, which manages the Druzhba oil pipeline system. Being one of the world’s largest oil pipeline networks, Druzhba pipeline serves as a major artery for transporting crude oil from Russia to many European countries. Despite having the capacity to pump more than 2 million barrels per day, the pipeline has been delivering only a fraction of it as most European countries turned away from Russian energy sources since the start of full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
