Russian troops attacked in the Kursk and Sumy regions, including northwest of Sumy in the Bessalovka area and in the direction of Katerynivka, north of Sumy in the Kondratovka and Alekseyevka area, and northeast of Sumy in the Yunakovka area. Russian public groups claim that Ukrainian troops counterattacked in the area of Bessalovka and Konstantinovka. The Z-channel, associated with the Northern Group of Russian Forces, reported that the Russian military command was reinforcing units of the 1427th Motorized Rifle Regiment operating in Tetkino with units of the 2nd GRU Spetsnaz Brigade for future attacks on Ryzhevka. The military blogger claimed that units of the 2nd Special Forces Brigade had previously provided assistance to units of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment in the Alekseyevka area, but primarily conducted aerial reconnaissance. The Z-public claims that unidentified airborne forces units are building new bridges in unspecified areas of the Kursk region, while the Russian military command continues to concentrate forces in the area. At the same time, strikes by Ukrainian drones interrupted fuel supplies to units of the 2nd Battalion of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment along the 38K-006 Korenovo – Vnezapnoye road.
Recall, the Public Sociology Laboratory has released a new report on how Russians perceive Russia’s war against Ukraine. Researchers visited the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops entered last August, and spoke with local residents, many of whom have become refugees.
In informal conversations with laboratory staff, who identified themselves as volunteers, people shared their experiences—how the war changed their daily lives, what shifted their worldview, and whether solidarity is possible between different groups affected by the war, as well as between those affected and the majority unaffected by the war. The new study is based on interviews with sociologists in the Kursk region last fall. In August 2024, part of the region came under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russian authorities declared a state of emergency and a "counterterrorism operation." In the first weeks after the Ukrainian Armed Forces entered the region, more than 130,000 people were evacuated from border settlements, most of whom ended up in Kursk.
More than 90 temporary accommodation centers were opened in the region, where thousands of people were relocated, as well as numerous humanitarian aid distribution centers. A year later, many refugees are still unable to return home. Victims are still trying to receive compensation from the government. Air raid sirens sound almost daily in Kursk and the surrounding area, and sometimes air raids occur in residential areas. In the Kursk region, there are people who were directly affected by the war and became refugees—they lost their homes, moved from the region to Kursk or other towns. And there are residents who, although they hear the alarm daily, were not affected by the war.
